There are many tools and knives which can help you carve fruits and vegetables easily and sharply but as a start  there is no need for special carving knives; one sharp-pointed knife is enough to carve fruits and vegetables nicely. The knife, however, must be sharp at all times.

The list of fruits and vegetables which you can think of starting carving:Vegetables: Carrots, pumpkins, tomatoes, cucumbers, Chinese radishes, eggplants, spring onions, chilies, radishes etc.Fruits: Apples, pineapples, papayas, canteloupes, guavas, watermelons, jicamas (or yam bean tubers), mangoes, rose apples, sapodillas, and jujubes.

Few tips to help you manage your caved fruits and vegetables:

1. After carving, fruits and vegetables should be placed in ice cold water so the petals of flower designs are firm and spread beautifully.

2. Carved fruits and vegetables should not be left in water as this will cause petals to become discolored and to spoil.

3. Each type of carved fruit should be kept separately. This will prevent loss of all your work in the event that one type spoils.

4. Store carved fruits and vegetables by putting them in containers and placing in a refrigerator, or if no refrigerator is available, by covering them with a damp piece of thin white cloth and putting them in a place protected from drafts so they do not dry and wilt.

5. After carving, pumpkin should be dipped in water and removed right away. If left in water, flower petal designs will become bruised.

Always choose vegetables that are firm and free of significant blemishes. If you cannot serve your veggie art creations immediately, seal them in an airtight container and refrigerate them.

What kind of online tutorials are available?

You can easily find sites with necessary information to start this amazing art. I have searched the net for most valuable stuff and included those sites, tutorials or videos at the the end of this article.

For example: This is a step by step tutorial at 'thai carving' about 'Courgette/Cucumber Leaf' (I have included few pictures, not all)

1. Cut a slice from the side of the courgette.

2. Cut the slice into a leaf shape.

3. Cut a very thin slice from the skin of the courgette to mark out one side of the stem of the leaf.

4. Cut out another thin slice to mark out the other side of the stem of the leaf..

5. Starting at the wide end of the courgette cut out a triangle shape.

6. Cut out more triangle shapes along the stem marked out earlier. The triangles should get smaller as you get nearer the thin end of the courgette.

7. Around the outside of the courgette cut out small triangle shapes.

8. The finished leaf.
